🚀 Getting Started

Up and running in 5 steps

From install to your first parent message: here's everything you need to get ClassWatcher working in Brightspace.

⏱ About 5 minutes
1
Step 1
Install the extension & pin it
ClassWatcher is a Chrome extension. Install it from the Chrome Web Store, then pin it to your toolbar so it's always one click away.

Works in Chrome, Edge, and all Chromium browsers (Brave, Opera, etc.).
🧩 Add to Chrome · it's free
Pin the ClassWatcher extension to your Chrome toolbar
Click the puzzle piece 🧩 → find ClassWatcher → click the pin icon
💡 In Edge, click the puzzle piece and use the eye icon to show ClassWatcher in the toolbar.
2
Step 2
Sign in & enter your details
Click the ClassWatcher icon in your toolbar to open the panel. Sign in with Google or create an account.

You'll be asked for your name (used in parent messages) and a reply-to email so parents can reach you directly.

⚠️ Your Brightspace URL is required
Enter your school's Brightspace address (e.g. https://pdsb.elearningontario.ca). Without it, Quick Links won't appear, navigation buttons won't work, and ClassWatcher can't detect your pages. This is the most common reason new users see a half-empty app.

ClassWatcher opens as a side panel and stays open while you navigate Brightspace

Step 3
Import your class list
In Brightspace, navigate to your course's Class List page (Course Admin → Class List). ClassWatcher will detect it automatically and offer to import your students.

This only needs to happen once per class. You can also add students manually or sync from a Google Sheet if you already have a list.

💡 Have multiple classes? Repeat this step for each one. ClassWatcher supports unlimited classes on the Pro plan.

Step 4
Go to an assignment or quiz & scan
Navigate to any assignment submission or quiz attempts page in Brightspace. ClassWatcher will detect the page and show a Scan button.

Hit Scan and you'll instantly see which students haven't submitted. No spreadsheet, no manual counting.

Missing students are listed immediately after scanning. Click any name to see what they're missing

Works on quiz pages too, same one-click scan
💡 Click Watch This Page to save the assignment to your Watch List. ClassWatcher will track it every time you scan, so you can see who's still missing over time.

Step 5
Select students & send a message
From the scan results, select the students you want to contact. Hit Message Parents and ClassWatcher will pull up the Messaging Console.

Choose SMS or Email, pick a template or write your own, preview the message, then send. That's it. ClassWatcher logs every contact automatically.

💡 All beta users get 100 free messaging credits to start. 1 SMS = 1 credit, 1 email = 0.2 credits.
🎉
You're all set.
That's the full loop: scan, see who's missing, message parents. Most teachers do this in under two minutes once it's set up.

Head to Brightspace, and the ClassWatcher panel will be waiting for you.
