Privacy Policy
1. Who This Policy Applies To
This policy applies to teachers who create a ClassWatcher account at classwatcher.com/app and use the ClassWatcher Chrome Extension.
Students do not create accounts, do not install the extension, and do not interact with ClassWatcher directly. Student names and class lists are handled exclusively on the teacher's own device as described in Section 3.
2. Information We Collect
How: Collected when you sign up using Google Sign-In (Google SSO). We request the minimum OAuth scopes necessary:
openid, email, and profile. We do not receive your Google password.Where it lives: Stored in ClassWatcher's database on DreamHost servers located in the United States.
How: Entered manually by you. This data is stored only in Chrome local storage on your own device. It is never transmitted to ClassWatcher's servers and never leaves your browser.
Clearing this data: Uninstalling the extension or clearing Chrome's local storage removes it entirely.
How: Stored in Chrome local storage on your device. A phone number is transmitted to our SMS provider Twilio only at the moment you explicitly tap "Send" to dispatch an SMS reminder. ClassWatcher's servers do not store phone numbers.
Twilio: Once transmitted for delivery, the message is handled according to Twilio's Privacy Policy.
What we transmit: Only anonymous aggregate counts (e.g., "5 missing out of 28"). No student names, student IDs, or any other identifying information are sent to ClassWatcher's servers.
Purpose: Scan history and product analytics to improve the extension.
How: Message text and the recipient phone number are transmitted to Twilio at the moment of sending for delivery. ClassWatcher does not store the content of SMS messages on its own servers.
How: Payments are processed entirely by Stripe. ClassWatcher never sees, transmits, or stores your credit card number or full payment details. Stripe's secure payment form handles all sensitive card data directly. See Stripe's Privacy Policy for details.
Purpose: Understanding how the product is used so we can improve it.
What we do not collect: No personally identifiable information is included in analytics data.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above for the following purposes:
- To operate and authenticate your account — your name and email allow you to sign in and access your subscription.
- To deliver SMS reminders — phone numbers and message text are passed to Twilio solely to send the messages you explicitly request.
- To process payments — subscription billing is handled via Stripe.
- To improve the product — anonymous scan counts and aggregate usage data help us understand how teachers use ClassWatcher and where to focus development.
- To respond to support requests — if you contact us, we use your email to reply.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for advertising or share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
4. Third-Party Services
ClassWatcher integrates with the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy.
openid, email, profile. We do not access Google Drive, Gmail, or any other Google service. Google Privacy Policy →5. Student Privacy, FERPA & PIPEDA
Because student personally identifiable information (PII) does not transit or reside on ClassWatcher's servers, ClassWatcher does not constitute an "educational agency or institution" that receives "education records" as defined under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), nor does it act as a third-party service provider receiving student records as defined under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
The only student-related data that ever reaches our servers is anonymous aggregate counts (e.g., "12 missing out of 30"), which contain no names, IDs, or other identifying attributes.
Teachers are responsible for ensuring their use of ClassWatcher — including any student names or phone numbers they choose to enter — complies with their school's data governance policies and applicable privacy laws.
6. Children's Privacy
ClassWatcher is a tool designed exclusively for teachers. Students — including those under the age of 13 — do not create accounts, install the extension, or interact with ClassWatcher in any way. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
If you believe we have inadvertently received personal information from a child, please contact us immediately at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.
7. Data Retention
8. Your Rights & Data Deletion
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your ClassWatcher account and all associated data at any time. To do so, email [email protected] with the subject line "Data Deletion Request." We will process your request within 30 days.
You may also delete student and parent data at any time by clearing Chrome's local storage for the ClassWatcher extension, or by uninstalling the extension entirely — no account action is required.
9. Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the data we hold. Teacher account information is stored on password-protected servers with access controls. Communication between the extension and ClassWatcher's servers uses HTTPS/TLS encryption in transit.
Because student names and phone numbers are stored only in Chrome local storage on your device, the security of that data depends in part on the physical and software security of your own computer. We recommend keeping your device and Chrome browser up to date.
10. International Data Transfers
ClassWatcher's servers are hosted by DreamHost in the United States. If you are located outside the United States, your teacher account data will be transferred to and processed in the US. By creating an account, you consent to this transfer.
SMS messages sent via Twilio are also processed in the United States.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify active users by email. Continued use of ClassWatcher after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
